Sterling silver is durable enough to wear every day, but like any precious metal it rewards a little care. The good news: keeping your jewelry bright takes only a few habits. This guide covers solid 925 sterling silver as well as our gold and rose gold plated finishes.

Why does sterling silver tarnish?

Tarnish is a thin dark layer that forms when silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air. Humidity, cosmetics, wool, rubber bands and some foods speed it up. It is a surface change, not damage, and it does not mean the silver is fake — in fact, only real silver tarnishes this way. Wearing your jewelry often actually slows tarnish, because gentle friction keeps the surface polished.

Everyday habits that prevent damage

  • Last on, first off. Put jewelry on after lotion, perfume, hairspray and makeup, and take it off before bed.
  • Avoid water and chlorine. Remove pieces before swimming, showering, hot tubs and cleaning with household chemicals.
  • Skip the gym. Sweat and knocks are hard on fine chains and plating.
  • Wipe after wearing. A quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth removes skin oils before they settle.

How to clean sterling silver

  1. Light tarnish: rub gently with a silver polishing cloth, following the shape of the piece.
  2. Everyday grime: soak for a few minutes in lukewarm water with a drop of mild, phosphate-free dish soap, then rinse and dry completely with a soft cloth.
  3. Detailed areas: use a very soft baby toothbrush around letters and cut-outs.

Avoid toothpaste, baking soda pastes and abrasive powders — they leave fine scratches — and never use silver dip on stones or on plated jewelry.

Caring for gold and rose gold plated pieces

Plating is a thin layer of gold over sterling silver, so the rule is to be gentle. Do not use a silver polishing cloth or any polish on plated jewelry: it removes the gold along with the dirt. Instead, wipe with a soft dry cloth, or rinse briefly in mild soapy water and dry immediately. Keeping plated pieces away from chlorine, perfume and friction is the single best way to make the color last.

Storing your jewelry

  • Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box so chains do not tangle and surfaces do not scratch.
  • Keep jewelry somewhere cool and dry — not in the bathroom.
  • Add an anti-tarnish strip or a small silica gel packet to the box to absorb moisture.
  • Fasten clasps before storing chains to prevent knots.
