Choosing a chain length is the one decision that changes how a pendant looks more than anything else. The same name necklace can read as a delicate choker or a relaxed everyday piece depending on a few inches of chain. Every necklace in our necklace collection can be ordered in seven lengths — 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches — or as a pendant only if you already have a chain you love. This guide explains where each length falls and how to pick the right one.
Where each length sits
Lengths below are measured end to end, clasp included, and describe a typical adult neck. A slimmer or wider neck moves the pendant up or down by roughly an inch.
| Length | Where it falls | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 12 in | Snug around the base of the neck | Children and very fitted choker looks |
| 14 in | Just above the collarbone | Choker style on adults, teens |
| 16 in | On the collarbone | Small name and initial pendants, open necklines |
| 18 in | Just below the collarbone | The most popular everyday length for women |
| 20 in | A few inches below the collarbone | Crew necks, layering under an 18" chain, men's pendants |
| 22 in | At or just above the bust line | Larger pendants, wearing over knitwear |
| 24 in | At the bust line or below | Long, relaxed looks and men's chains |
The quick answer: start with 18 inches
If you are buying a gift and do not know the recipient's preference, 18 inches is the safest choice. It sits just below the collarbone on most adults, shows a pendant clearly with almost any neckline, and works on its own or as the shortest strand in a layered set. It is also the length most of our customers choose for custom name necklaces.
Match the length to the neckline
V-necks and scoop necks
An 18 or 20 inch chain lets the pendant follow the shape of the neckline and land in the open space, which flatters a V-neck in particular.
Crew necks and high necklines
Go either short (14–16 in) so the necklace sits above the fabric, or long (22–24 in) so it rests on top of it. In-between lengths tend to disappear under the collar.
Off-the-shoulder and strapless
Shorter chains of 14–16 inches frame the collarbone and keep the look clean.
Consider the size of the pendant
Small, dainty pendants such as initials or a single star look best close to the face on 16–18 inch chains. Wider designs — a full name in script, a pet silhouette or a statement charm — have more presence on 18–20 inch chains, where they have room to hang flat.
How to measure at home
- Take a necklace you already wear and like, lay it flat and measure from the end of the clasp to the end of the ring.
- No necklace to measure? Wrap a piece of string or a phone charging cable around your neck, let it fall where you want the pendant to sit, mark the spot and measure the length with a ruler.
- Add about two inches to your neck measurement as a starting point for a comfortable, non-choker fit.
Layering necklaces
For a layered look, keep at least two inches between strands so pendants do not tangle: 16 + 18 + 20 inches is a classic trio. Mixing finishes works well too — a sterling silver chain next to an 18K gold plated one gives a modern, intentional contrast. Browse our minimalist necklaces for pieces that stack easily.
Lengths for children and men
For young children a 12 or 14 inch chain keeps the pendant from swinging into food and play; always supervise small children wearing jewelry. Men usually prefer 20–24 inches, where a pendant sits mid-chest rather than at the collarbone.
